Caregiver accused of stealing pain medication from terminally ill woman

MIDDLEBURG — A 23-year-old McClure woman is accused of stealing Methadone from a terminally ill woman who was taking the prescription medication to ease her pain.

Gretta Jane Hunter, of 64, E. High St., McClure, is accused of stealing about 20 Methadone tablets valued at $50 from Rhonda Knouse, of 919 Bowersox Road in Center Township, Snyder County, state police at Selinsgrove said.

Knouse told police she has terminal cancer and has several caretakers in her home to assist her, including Hunter, court records said.

In the past few months, Knouse told police, she noticed Methadone pills she was prescribed were missing so she began to hide the pain medication.

On June 20, however, she left the medicine bottle out on her night stand and told police she saw Hunter standing near the table and that the bottle had overturned on the floor. Knouse said she asked Hunter to remove the contents of her pants pocket and found that she had concealed about 20 tablets, court records said.

A few weeks later while under questioning by police Hunter allegedly admitted taking 10 Methadone pills.

She is charged with third-degree misdemeanor attempted theft by unlawful taking and attempted receiving stolen  property. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 24 before District Judge Lori R. Hackenberg.
