Congratulations, it's a trail: 8 adopt portions of BVRT to maintain

LEWISBURG — Be careful how you treat the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, you’re now riding or running on somebody’s “baby” as eight sections of the nine-mile trail have been adopted for 2013.

The Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority announced the adopters Monday for the group’s Adopt-a-Trail program, meant to involve volunteers with maintaining and enhancing the year-old trail, said LARA Executive Director Katie Davis.

Who are these proud mamas and papas? They are:

  • Cub Scout Pack 3538 and Boy Scout Troop 538
  • Computer Support Services Inc.
  • Dr. Shawn and Kelly McGlaughlin
  • Litter Critters (Kelley, Barker, DeSantis and Graham families)
  • Cub Scout Pack 3509
  • Don and Nancy Bowman
  • Bell, Gustafson and Vollmayr-Lee families
  • The Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance.

For one year, the adopters will help with their respective trail sections, monitoring them and doing maintenance at least three times a year, Davis said.

The primary duty of the Adopt-a-Trail volunteers is to pick up litter and debris, but they also may report fallen trees, erosion signs, safety issues, vandalism and suspicious or illegal activity on the trail.

The adoptees also may take part in trail work days with LARA staff and other volunteers when minor brush cutting needs to be done.

And as part of an Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 20, there will be a brief training session for the Adopt-a-Trail program coordinators, followed by a community trail work day from 1 to 3 p.m.

For more information or to sign up for the next work day, contact or call the LARA office at (570) 524-4774.
