Bucknell's Relay for Life is this weekend

LEWISBURG — This year’s Relay For Life of Bucknell University takes place tomorrow, April 27 at 5 a.m. to April 28 at Gerhard Fieldhouse and features Zumba, the popular exercise class.

“It's something we have never done before,” said Emily Patridge, president of the Bucknell chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, a student organization in conjunction with the American Cancer Society. “Since Relay can be extremely emotional at times, this Zumba class is a time for everyone to let loose and have a good laugh while getting some exercise,” she said.

Bucknell’s theme this year is “Hollywood: Unite to Outshine Cancer,” Patridge said.

Colleges Against Cancer is a club that unites the campus, student, faculty and staff, she said. Relay for Life is one of two major events the Bucknell chapter hosts, the other being “Paint Bucknell Pink,”  a 5K walk/run in the fall.

The goal for Bucknell’s Relay this year: about $76,000.

A Survivorship Ceremony and lap will include a student survivor with personal testimony about dealing with the disease. A special area will let survivors to spend time with friends and families. CAC will provide  additional refreshments, such as pizza, vegetables and a special cake, as well as special gifts.

“Every year, we invite Bucknell deans to serve refreshments after the Luminaria ceremony,” Patridge said, and this year, the special treat is Ritas water ice. Bucknell President John Bravmen and his wife Wendy are to attend among participants.

The final event is the Fight Back Ceremony, during which the CAC vice president will talk about the importance of Relay For Life and fundraising.

“This is a time to remind everyone about the fight that we all need to take part in,” Patridge said, “to raise money for research and advancements so that we can beat this horrible disease.”
