— LEWISBURG -- Union County Conservation District will get $353,544 in two Department of Environmental Protection grants for work on Buffalo Creek and assorted small creeks and streams countywide, DEP announced Tuesday.

The Buffalo Creek grant is for $180,404; the Union County waterways grant is for $173,140.

"We're very excited" by the news of the awards, said Bill Deitrick, district manager of Union County Conservation. "Both of these are continuations of programs we’ve already started ... and continue some of the conservation efforts."

Union County is among 40 counties sharing in more than $18.7 million in protection projects intended to improve watersheds, stormwater runoff, acid mine drainage and educational programs, among other environmental efforts, according to DEP.

Also getting grant funds: Northumberland County Conservation District, which will receive $356,000 for projects on Schwaben Creek and Hallowing Run.
