Teen dads build toy boxes for their children

MILTON — A group of young fathers recently gathered to construct handmade Christmas gifts for their children.

Using drills, hammers and glue, students in the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) Project ELECT (Education Leading to Employment and Career Training) assembled toy boxes for their children.

Carsanna and Dennis Buckley, from Heirlooms of the Heart, Shamokin Dam, created the precut wood kits. They also provided one-on-one instruction and assisted the students in building the toy boxes.

“The dads like to get together and hang out,” said Kim Eroh, CSIU family education project manager. “The goal is for them to support each other and make friends who can relate to their unique situations.”

The fathers will present the toy boxes, along with books they selected, as Christmas presents for their sons and daughters.

Project ELECT is a counseling and instructional program for pregnant and parenting teens (mothers and fathers) in high school or alternative settings and up to age 22. The program provides intensive case management, health education, child development, parenting skills, training, career awareness and job-readiness training.
