Milton plans National Library Week events

MILTON — The Milton Public Library will join libraries in schools, on campuses and in communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week from April 14-20, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

The library will mark the observance with two special events. A Cherry Blossom Festival and Touch a Truck Event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 13. Families are invited to see fire trucks, police cars, dozers and big rigs and visit an arts and crafts festival on the grounds of Rose Hill.

The other event will be a fundraiser at Wendy’s in Lewisburg on April 14. People who eat at the restaurant between 5 and 8 p.m. will have 10 percent of their bills donated to the library.

The Milton Public Library serves Milton borough, East and West Chillisquaque and Turbot townships by providing library services that include book and DVD lending, Mango Languages, Ancestry.com, e-books, programs and events for all ages, outreach lending to senior centers and day cares.

“Service to the community has always been the focus of the library,” said Sue Williams, of the Milton library. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.”

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources, library officials said. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study.

Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and meet them. Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the communities they serve and then respond.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
