— WEST MILTON — A local group is hoping to add a little extra sparkle to the lives of Valley children in need of a pick-me-up.

Lifting Little Lives is hosting its annual winter fundraiser tonight to raise money for the group’s work providing support to children across the region.

The group started when a friend’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, said president Jeremy Kahley.

“We had a big fundraiser for her and she made it known that after she passed, she wanted the same benefit to continue to help children,” he said. “So we’ve done it in her memory.”

The group hosts several events each year to raise money to directly fund gifts for children and their families, Kahley said. The winter fundraiser will begin at 5 p.m. at the Blue Spruce on Route 405 in Milton, Kahley said.

“Right now, we have 17 active members that are 100 percent volunteer,” he said. Through its fundraising efforts, Lifting Little Lives has sponsored both small efforts — such as mailing gas cards to families in need of extra money to travel to hospital appointments — and large gifts, Kahley said.

A Snyder County girl battling cancer wanted some video games to be able to use for fun and in her treatment, Kahley said. The group bought her new game systems, games and a flatscreen television to be able to play all she wanted.

“We got to talk with her doctors who said it would be great physical therapy,” he said.

The group also bought a swimming pool for a Sunbury girl with spina bifida and sent a Bloomsburg boy to the World Monster Truck Finals in Las Vegas for a behind-the-scenes experience, Kahley said.

“We want to help lift the spirits of local children and we only pick children that are in our immediate area,” he said.

The winter fundraiser isn’t to fund any specific child’s wish, but to raise funds for the group’s general fund, Kahley said.

“It’s so that we can continue to help,” he said.
