GFWC Junior Woman's Club meets

MILTON — Milton Borough Manager Chuck Beck praised the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Milton at a recent club meeting for helping the borough get a head start on recycling 30 years ago.

Speaking about the local recycling program, Beck noted that the club’s efforts started a voluntary recycling effort in 1983. Towns the size of Milton then were mandated to have a program in 1987 and in 1989 Milton received the second largest performance check from the state.

He explained using grant money to get equipment and buildings at the current town recycling center.

In 2010, Milton received $28,000 for its recycling efforts and has been recognized by Professional Recyclers of America.

A recent addition has been recycling for small businesses in Milton. The Lycoming County landfill collects cardboard each week from local businesses. Also, single-stream recycling is now available through Hometown Recycling or A and R Disposal.

In club business, members gathered food items for Easter baskets for three local needy families and set 2 p.m. April 21 for litter pick up on Housel Run Road. The club also voted to co-sponsor a night this summer at the Williamsport Crosscutters baseball game.

Education chairman Lynnette Weisner said applications for the $750 health career scholarship are available in the high school guidance office. Deadline is May 3.

The club also recently gave $205 to local winners of the arts contest.
