This week The Pennsylvania Beer Alliance, Harrisburg, is showcasing Durdach Bros. Inc., as its “Independent Beer Wholesale Distributor of the Week.”
Durdach Bros. Inc., is located in Paxinos and distributes to several counties including Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union. This year is its 75th anniversary of being in business.
Started in 1938 by his father and uncle, Richard Durdach has expanded Durdach Bros. Inc., in terms of both distribution area and brands of beer. Durdach Bros. was established in 1938 in Shamokin. Prior to 1938, Rick’s grandfather, Paul Durdach, was in the beer business. Durdach Bros. began with Rick’s uncle Jake and father John. But after starting the business, John entered the Navy. It wasn’t until after a stint of working for the University of Notre Dame within the physical education staff and coaching boxing that John came back to the business he helped create with his brother.
In 1965 they moved the company to Paxinos where its headquarters remains today. The company was incorporated a year later, in 1966. That same year, Jake Durdach died and the business was taken over by John Durdach until his death in 1981.
While trying to expand the company in the late 1980s, Richard Durdach, then third generation owner, was interviewed by Coors on being one of their distributors within the state. Durdach Bros. began selling Coors in 1987, the same year it was named the number “One” wholesaler of Genesee in Pennsylvania.
When Richard took over the business after his father’s death in 1981 there were only 12 employees working at Durdach Bros., and today there are more than 70 full time, part time and seasonal employees that work within the company. Durdach Bros. also serves more than 100 local distributors and more than 1,000 on-premise retail customers.
It wasn’t until 1990s that the company expanded into Lycoming County. In 1997, Durdach Bros., Inc. bought Williamsport Beverage and expanded to distribution for more than 10 counties. The company previously worked in Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia and parts of Schuylkill counties. But with that purchase, they went into Lycoming, Clinton, Sullivan, Tioga and Bradford counties as well. Now they service a 12-county area which includes Potter and all of Schuylkill County.
Every item that is distributed by the company comes from Paxinos. Since expanding into the area, the company has continued to grow. It began distributing Miller products in the southern counties in 2009 and built an additional warehouse in Paxinos in 2010 to house added brands such as Sam Adams, Guinness and Red Bull all sold in Schuylkill County. Durdach Bros., Inc. also distributes Rolling Rock, Labatt, Corona, Yuengling, Straub, Stouts, Stella, Mikes, Appalachian, Troegs, Yards and Victory.
Durdach Bros currently services 1,050 taverns and 105 distributors in Bradford, Clinton, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Schuylkill, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties.
Durdach Bros. gives back to its community by participating in charity events held by the local chamber, fire companies, lodges and many others. They also purchase their gas, tires, paper, cleaning supples, forklifts, trucks and other supplies from the local community.
Over the past years they have raised more than $140,000 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and an additional $110,000 for cystic fibrosis research.
