Robert V. Shelly, 87, Lewisburg

— LEWISBURG — Robert V. Shelly, 87, of Lewisburg, passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at his home.

He was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Easton, a son of the late Walter Sr. and Lillian (Markley) Shelly. On Jan. 19, 1952, he married the former Eleanor Butler Pangburn, who survives. Together they celebrated nearly 62 years of marriage.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lewisburg.

Robert was a 1943 graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia, and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.

He served in the Navy in the South Pacific at the end of World War II. He served aboard L.S.T. 1015 and Auxiliary Minesweeper U.S.S. Project. After his service in the Navy, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete his education, where he graduated from the “Towne School of Engineering” in 1948 and received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.

He worked for J.E. Brenneman Co. in Philadelphia, a marine contractor and engineering company. Robert progressed from a civil engineer to vice president and Board of Directors. He then served as president of S.T. Hudson Engineers, an engineering and consulting firm.

Robert was a member of the Ports of Philadelphia Maritime Association, the Philadelphia Union League and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was most proud of being involved with the restoration work on “Carpenters Hall” as he was a member of the Carpenter Company of Philadelphia which is in the historic district.

After retirement he and his wife moved to Turbotville and enjoyed working on their farm.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one brother, William Shelly; four nephews, Richard Chalmers and wife Dawn, John Chalmers and wife Mary “Bonnie”, Craig Chalmers and wife Deborah and Thomas Bell; one niece, Eleanor Daugherty; two great nieces, Wendy S. Chalmers and Elizabeth Daugherty; and one great nephew, Samuel Daugherty.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Walter Shelly Jr.; and one sister, Edith Shelly.

Services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family in Lewisburg Cemetery..
