Dr. John J. “Jack” Marlette, 90, Selinsgrove

— SELINSGROVE — Dr. John J. “Jack” Marlette, 90, of Selinsgrove, died, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born April 5, 1923, in Shamokin, the son of the late A.Z. and Vera (Quinn) Marlette. On Dec. 19, 1992, married to the former Gloria J. Herrold who survives.

He graduated from Shamokin High School in 1941. In 1949, he graduated from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Ill. John was a World War II veteran and served as a Navy First Class Quartermaster in the Pacific Theater on PT 106.

He opened his practice as a podiatrist in Sunbury in 1952 and continued in practice for 47 years before retiring in 1999. He also worked as a podiatrist at the Selinsgrove State School.

He served as president of the PA Podiatry Association and received several awards in recognition of his service to the profession, including for his role as one of the founders of the PA Podiatry Association’s Surgical Seminar Committee.

He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Selinsgrove, a 50-year member of the Travelers Protective Association of Sunbury.

He was an avid golfer and member of many organizations, including Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 267 and the Americus Hose Company, both of Sunbury. In his retirement, he continued to be of service by volunteering at Mostly Mutts in Sunbury and teaching reading to adults through the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Marlette and children, John Marlette, Jim Marlette and wife, Erin, and Jacqueline Marlette-Boras and husband, Kenneth; stepchildren, Alesia Foster and husband, Stephen, and Timothy Erdley; grandchildren, Cristy Soskin and husband, David, Andy Marlette and wife, Melissa, Matthew Boras, and Sonja Tosh and husband, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Marlette, Chloe Marlette and Zachary Soskin; stepgrandchildren, Ally Weaver and husband, James, Vanessa Beck and husband, Joshua, and Stephen Foster II; stepgreat-grandchild, Addison Weaver; two sisters, Ann Laura Kreisher and Vera Lou Hershey; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

There will be no viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Drive, Selinsgrove, with the Rev. Daniel F.X. Powell, as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Mostly Mutts, 284 Little Mountain Road, Sunbury, PA 17801.

The George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills is assisting the family with the arrangements.
