Clarence S. Weaver, 87, Myerstown

— MYERSTOWN — Clarence S. Weaver, 87, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, in StoneRidge, Myerstown.

He was born Oct. 7, 1926, a son of the late Clarence A. and Edna L. (Neidig) Weaver. He was married to the former Beverly June Crownover who passed away Sept. 6, 2009. They celebrated 57 years of marriage.

He was educated in Shamokin and Coal Township public schools and graduated from Central Penn Business School after his discharge from the Navy.

Clarence was sworn into the Navy on Oct. 7, 1943, on his 17th birthday. After boot camp, service school, naval air gunners school and flight training, he was assigned to Air Group Nine as a turret gunner in the torpedo squadron. While flying from the USS Lexington in February 1945, Air Group Nine was the first carrier-based air group to bomb Tokyo. Air Group Nine was transferred to the USS Yorktown on March 9, 1945, and on April 17 sunk the Battleship Yamato, flagship of the Japanese Imperial Navy, along with an Agano class cruiser.

Military decorations awarded to Clarence are the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal, with three gold stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific ribbon, with two stars representing the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Clarence was employed in a number of wholesale firms throughout central Pennsylvania. He became credit manager of Pyttronic Industries, Harrisburg, in 1962, and worked in credit and collections until his retirement in 1996 from Philadelphia Mixers, Palmyra, where he was responsible for domestic and international credit and collections, as well as all exports and imports.

A volunteer in the pharmacy at the Veterans Hospital, Lebanon, beginning in 1998, Clarence was awarded the Outstanding Service Award in 1999. He was a member of VFW Post 6417, Palmyra; the USS Yorktown Association, Charleston, S.C.; the Navy Club Ship 91, Lebanon; the Lions Club of Palmyra; and the First Evangelical Congregational Church of Palmyra, where he formerly served on the board of trustees. He also was a 30-year member of the National Association of Credit Management; a former member of the board of directors of the Delaware Valley Creditmen’s Association; and former chairman of the National Sporting Goods Group, St. Louis, Mo.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and David Martin, of Danville, and Pam and Harold Kerstetter, of Carlisle; two grandchildren, Rebecca Martin and David Kerstetter; one sister, Evelyn Snyder, of Sunbury; two nephews; a niece; and many cousins in the Shamokin and Trevorton areas.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, at 10 a.m. Thursday.
