LEWISBURG — John “Al” Sassaman, 98, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
He was born Oct. 29, 1915, in Danville, a son of the late John Frederick and Cora (Sandel) Sassaman.
John was a 1934 graduate of Northumberland High School.
He married Ernestine M. Rowe on June 22, 1942, in San Diego, Calif., just before being shipped to Duxford, England, with the Air Force during World War II. He often spoke of the “trip of his life” when he and Ernestine returned to San Diego and other parts of California for their 40th wedding anniversary.
John was employed by Ott Packaging in Selinsgrove as a die maker for more than 30 years.
He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a master sergeant in 1975.
After his wife died, he married the former Nancy Lepley Smith. They lived in Northumberland for more than 20 years before her death in 2009.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Janet Sassaman; one grandson, Philip Sassaman; one granddaughter and her spouse, Dr. Ann and Winton DeShong; one stepdaughter and her spouse, Della and John Gessner and their two sons; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Ellen Sassaman; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth and Earl Peters.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Moyer, and two brothers, Paul “Fred” Sassaman and James Sassaman.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Northumberland.
A time of visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Joseph Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland. A private funeral will follow. Burial with military honors will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Selinsgrove.
