Marks C. “Max” Baker, 86, Sunbury

— SUNBURY — Marks C. “Max” Baker, 86, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.

Max was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Northumberland, a son of the late John and Dorothy (Mackamer) Baker. On Dec. 1, 1950, he married the former Doris M. Martz, who survives.

He was a graduate of Northumberland High School and then went on to serve his country in the Navy during World War II on the USS Nacheninga, “The Fighting Indian Chief,” in the South Pacific.

Max worked for many years at Merck Corp. as a chemical operator, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church where he enjoyed helping in many activities. He was a former member of the Northumberland Jaycees and a member of the American Legion Post 44.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jeffrey M. Baker and his fiancee, Amy Blasko, of Emmaus; one daughter and son-in-law, LeeAnn B. and Steven Ritchie, of Sunbury; two granddaughters and their spouses, Julie R. and Greg Wagner and Jayme N. Ritchie and Kile Simpson; two great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Thomas Wagner; one sister, Florence Steese, of Northumberland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Robert and Charles Baker; and three sisters, Mary Ellen Baker, Gladys Bostian, and Betty Thomas.

Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:55 a.m. Friday in Otterbein United Methodist Church, 356 Vine St., Sunbury, followed by a celebration of life at 11 with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gunter officiating.

Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marks’ memory may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 356 Vine St., Sunbury, PA 17801.

Arrangements are by the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury.
