Edward S. Walthery Jr., 90, Lewisburg

— LEWISBURG — Edward S. Walthery Jr., 90, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Nov. 16, 2013, in RiverWoods, Lewisburg.

He was born in Ridgewood, N.J., a son of the late Edward Sr. and Olga Walthery. He lived in Ridgewood until his family moved to Salisbury, Md., during the great depression.

After returning to Ridgewood to complete high school, he joined the Army at the onset of World War II. He served in India during the war, attaining the rank of sergeant of the 9th Photographic Squadron, then returned to Ridgewood to join his father in forming Walthery and Son Building Contractors. He later moved to Bucks County where he resided until moving to Lewisburg in 2008.

In the years following his father’s retirement, Ed worked in commercial construction throughout the mid-Atlantic region, and also overseas in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. He spent the last 18 years of his career at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1985 as Director of Engineering and Construction.

He was a member of the Ivyland Presbyterian Church, and subsequently Newtown Presbyterian Church.

In retirement, he authored the novel “Saga” and several short philosophical works. He also taught adult literacy and enjoyed theatre and music. Throughout his life, he was an avid reader, philosopher, photographer, and traveler. He provided invaluable advice and support to family and friends throughout his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Patricia Walthery, of Lewisburg; two grandchildren, Abby and Nicholas Walthery, of New York; one niece, Lynn Manning and husband, Charles, of Florida; one grandniece, Katie Manning, of Rhode Island; and closest friend, Louise Jamieson, of Pennsylvania.

A memorial service was held on Monday evening, Nov. 18, at Marlow Hall in RiverWoods. A graveside memorial service will be held in Forest Grove Presbyterian Church, Forest Grove.

The Walthery family wishes to acknowledge the dedication and wonderful care Ed received for many years from the Riverview Manor and RiverWoods caregivers and staff, and also the Evangelical Hospital Hospice nurses, aides and volunteers.

Memorial donations may be made in Ed’s memory to the Salvation Army or for Alzheimer’s research.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
