George L. Church Jr., 58, Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE — George Luther Church Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 58 on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at his home on Fairway Drive.

He was born April 12, 1955, in Paoli, to Celia (Davis) Church, of State College and the late George L. Church.  On June 14, 1980, he married his wife and best friend, Cathy Rynard.

George was a 1973 graduate of The Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.

Mr. Church was president and co-owner of Rowe Sprinkler Systems, Inc. in Middleburg. George has been recognized as an expert in his field after over 30 years in the fire protection industry. He was a part of numerous industry events; from teaching AFSA (American Fire Sprinkler Association) seminars, sitting on the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) technical committees, and attending national conventions. In 2012 he was named Man of The Year by FPC (Fire Protection Contractor) magazine.

George had a quick wit and a fantastic sense of humor, and always was able to find the silver linings in life. Away from work, his favorite pastime was traveling with his wife and family. He enjoyed backpacking on Mount Washington in New Hampshire and was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. Mr. Church also was a member of the Lafayette Masonic Lodge 0194. Over the past decade, George could be found zipping around in his beloved Triumph TR6.

While residing in Strasburg, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a deacon. He was currently attending the Journey of Hope cancer support group at Wesley United Methodist Church, in Selinsgrove.

George is survived by his wife Cathy and his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ellen and David E. Ames, of Brooklyn, N.Y. In addition, George is survived by his mother, and his four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ellen Coffman, of State College, Elizabeth and Jeff Telford, of White Lake, Mich., Alice and B. Michael Parrish, of Annandale, Va. and Sarah and John Ford, of Norfolk, Va.

Friends and family may visit from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 306 Rhoads Ave., Selinsgrove where a celebration of George’s life will begin at 11 a.m. with Director of Nurture Lynn Schmoyer officiating.

Burial will be held privately in Woodward Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions in George’s memory can be made to the Journey of Hope cancer support group at Wesley United Methodist Church, 306 Rhoads Ave., Selinsgrove. A scholarship will be set up in George’s honor through the Fire Sprinkler Academy at Parkland College in Champaign, Ill.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
