Audrey Vincent Masteller, 83, Mount Pleasant, S.C.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.— Audrey Vincent Masteller, 83, formerly of Danville, Pa., died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Sandpiper Village Nursing and Rehab Center, Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Born July 9, 1929, in Williamsport, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Thaddeus Stevens and Ethel (Ikler) Vincent and sister of Thaddeus Jr. (“Teddy”) of Danville, all of whom preceeded her in death. On Sept. 11, 1948, she married John Nevin Masteller (formerly of Bloomsburg, Pa.), who survives in Mount Pleasant.

Audrey was a 1947 graduate of Danville High School and attended Cedar Crest College following graduation.

She married John shortly after John’s return from his WWII service, enjoying 64 years of marriage.

She devoted most of her life to being a loving wife, homemaker and mother to her three children.

Always an avid champion of animal rights, she supported various animal charities and never missed an opportunity to express her compassion for the plight of neglected and mistreated animals.  She and John took in a number of stray / abandoned cats over the years and gave them many happy years of care and comfort. Currently they own two rescue cats, Simon (Fatcat) and Chelsea.

Another of Audrey’s lifelong passions was interior design, at which she excelled. Her frequent pro bono consultations and guidance in interior design benefitted many friends and family members.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Lynn Rothrock, of Indian Land, S.C., and Vicky and Robert Becker, of Johns Island, S.C.; and one son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Marjorie, of Johns Island, S.C.; four grandchildren, Dr. Heather Dowlin and her husband Alex, of Charlotte, N.C., Marissa Marx and her husband John, of Chester Springs, Pa., Adam Becker and Amanda Rone (Nick), all of Johns Island, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Reese and Kinley Dowlin. In addition, she is survived by many dear extended family members.

There will be no public visitation.

Internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a no-kill animal shelter of your choice or to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412.

Arrangements have been entrusted to James A. McAlister Funeral Home of Charleston, SC.
