SUNBURY — Lois E. Barnhart, 89, of Sunbury, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in Manor Care, Sunbury.
She was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Harry and Bertha (Bickel) Hess. On Jan. 7, 1942, she married Woodrow W. Barnhart who preceded her in death on June 13, 1987.
Lois was a 1941 graduate of Sunbury High School.
She was formerly employed by Champ Hats, Tops-All, J.C. Penney Co., May’s Dress Shop, Wilhold Co., and First Phillips Industries.
She was a life long member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Sunbury where she was a lay reader, taught Sunday school, a member and former president of the Lutheran Women’s group, coordinator of the Meals on Wheels, and secretary at the church. She was a member of the Sunbury Democratic Women’s Club and was formerly employed at the Sixth Ward polls in Sunbury. One of her proudest accomplishments, along with her eight children, was the founding of the “Sunbury Leaders Club” with troops at St. Luke’s and Grace Lutheran churches.
Lois was an avid reader and passed on this love to all her daughters and granddaughters. As each child reached the age of six she took them to the library to obtain their own library card. She was also very proud of accompanying the Blossburg High School French Club to France and visiting the Eiffel Tower and Monaco. She also enjoyed a trip to St. Louis to see the “Arch”. Lois will be sorely missed by family, friends and the many young people whose lives she touched through Sunday school and the Sunbury Leader’s Club.
She is survivied by seven daughters and their husbands, Gloria J. Walker, Patricia and Paul Hollenbach, Kerri and Marvin Long, and Judie and David Thompson, all of Sunbury, Jayne L. Zoch, of Selinsgrove, Caryl and Roy Snyder, of Blossburg, and MaryAnn and Bob Fahringer, of Northumberland; one daughter-in-law, Deb Smith, of Sunbury; 11 grandchildren, Nicole Witmer, Jon Walker, Phillip Hollenbach, Patric Hollenbach, Brandon Barnhart, Amanda Eberhart, Caleb Snyder, Cory Snyder, Jeremy Long, Dustin Long and Kayl Long; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Rick; one son-in-law, Charles Zoch; one sister, June Wise; and one brother, Robert Hess.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Lois’ memory may be made to the Degenstein Library or to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Sunbury.
