WATSONTOWN — Jay K. Bortz, 55, of Woodland Avenue, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville after courageously battling pancreatic and liver cancer the past four years.

He was born Dec. 23, 1957, in Muncy, a son of the late Robert D. and Anna M. (Karnish) Bortz. On Sept. 11, 1976, he married the former Margaret L. “Maggie” Krisher and they have celebrated 37 years of marriage.

He was a 1976 graduate of Warrior Run High School.

Jay was the Public Works Director of the borough of Milton where he had worked for more than 30 years.

In addition to his wife, Maggie, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Amy Bortz, of Turbotville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kellie A. and Jeff Bates, of Watsontown; one grandson, Sawyer A. Bortz and a second grandson due in June to be named after his “pappy”, Jay Carter Bates; one brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Kandy Bortz, of Winslow, Ariz.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cathy L. and Gary Alderson, of Shamokin, Sandra L. Carson, of Montgomery; Reva S. and Mike Lutcher, of Milton; a sister-in-law, Mary S. Bortz, of Sarasota, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Stephen Bortz in April 2012.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main St., Watsontown, and are also invited to a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Watsontown Baptist Church, 501 Main St., Watsontown, with his pastor, the Rev. James Ritter officiating.

A private burial in Watsontown Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
