Jay K. Bortz, 55, Watsontown

WATSONTOWN — Jay K. Bortz, 55, of Woodland Avenue, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville after courageously battling pancreatic and liver cancer the past four years.

He was born Dec. 23, 1957, in Muncy, a son of the late Robert D. and Anna M. (Karnish) Bortz. On Sept. 11, 1976, he married the former Margaret L. “Maggie” Krisher and they have celebrated 37 years of marriage.

He was a 1976 graduate of Warrior Run High School.

Jay was the Public Works Director of the borough of Milton where he had worked for more than 30 years.

He regularly attended Watsontown Baptist Church.

He enjoyed woodworking and hunting with his family at the Greene Springs Hunting Camp in Haneyville and he loved being a “pappy”. Jay was a good listener and encouraged others who were dealing with illnesses similar to his. He also maintained his own strength and courage throughout his illness and was very dedicated to his work.

In addition to his wife, Maggie, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Amy Bortz, of Turbotville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kellie A. and Jeff Bates, of Watsontown; one grandson, Sawyer A. Bortz and a second grandson due in June to be named after his “pappy”, Jay Carter Bates; one brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Kandy Bortz, of Winslow, Ariz.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cathy L. and Gary Alderson, of Shamokin, Sandra L. Carson, of Montgomery; Reva S. and Mike Lutcher, of Milton; a sister-in-law, Mary S. Bortz, of Sarasota, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Stephen Bortz in April 2012.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main St., Watsontown, and are also invited to a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Watsontown Baptist Church, 501 Main St., Watsontown, with his pastor, the Rev. James Ritter officiating.

A private burial in Watsontown Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Watsontown Baptist Church, 501 Main St., Watsontown, PA 17777, or Geisinger Oncology for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17821.  Visit
