Virginia F. “Virge” Solomon, 84, Middleburg

— MIDDLEBURG — Virginia F. “Virge” Solomon, 84, formerly of West Ridge Road, passed away on Friday afternoon, April 5, 2013, at Graysonview, Selinsgrove.

She was born April 22, 1928, in Penns Creek, a daughter of the late Calvin and Mabel (Specht) Schell. She was married to Marlin M. Herman who died during World War II in 1945 while serving in France. On Oct. 19, 1946, she married Harold L. Solomon who preceded her in death on July 13, 2009 after 63 years of marriage.

Virginia attended school in Penns Creek.

She had been employed as a clerk in a grocery store in Franklin as well as Lepley’s Store in New Berlin. She also served as an Avon representative in New Berlin, a waitress at the Kopper Kettle, Middleburg, and as a clerk for 22 years at Bing’s Western Auto, Middleburg, and later at the Short Stop, Selinsgrove.

She was a member of St. Paul’s “Erdley’s” Lutheran Church, Middleburg, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was a life member of the auxiliary of the Kreamer Volunteer Fire Company, where she enjoyed helping to serve meals, and in the 1950s, she was a Girl Scout leader,.

Virginia loved spending time with her family, especially playing games with her great-grandchildren. Sewing, crocheting, camping and playing bingo were Virginia’s other enjoyments.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Carl Landis, and Ellen and Russell Smith, all of Middleburg; five grandchildren and their spouses, Corena and Gary Kline, Stephanie and Steve Beaver, all of Winfield, Michael Smith, Thomas and Nicole Landis and Carla Lyons, all of Middleburg; four great-grandchildren, Kendra and Cassandra Lyons, of Middleburg and Michael and Daniel Beaver, of Winfield;

She was preceded in death by one son in infancy, Cloyd Herman. She was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by one brother, John Schell, and four sisters, Anna Sprenkel, Beatrice Reinard, Betty Betsker and Arlene Kratzer.

Friends and family will be received from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Wayne Muthler officiating.

Burial will be in the New Berlin Cemetery.
