YORK — Gloria Elizabeth Benfer Long, 83, of York, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.
She was born April 6, 1930, in Beaver Springs, Snyder County, a daughter of the late H. Randall and Estella Mae (Ewing) Benfer. On Aug. 21, 1954, she married Richard J. Long who preceded her in death.
Gloria was a graduate of Mansfield University, with a bachelor’s degree in home economics, and Penn State University, with a master’s degree in education.
She was a home economics teacher at York Suburban High School for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that she taught in York city schools, beginning at William Penn High School in 1952. Mr. and Mrs. Long were in the antiques business for 25 years, operating Country Classics at the Black Angus Antique Mall in Adamstown. They retired from that business in 2001.
She was a member and Sunday school teacher of First Church of the Brethren, where she served on the building committee and as chair of the Christian Education Committee. She was also a member of the York County Home Economists, the Woman’s Club of York, York County Chapter of Retired Public School Employees, and the Garden Club of York.
Gloria is survived by two sons, Joseph B. Long, and his wife Rochelle, of Clarksville, Md., and Stephen R. Long, of Chester Springs; four grandchildren, Wesley, Emily, Clare and Stephen Long; a brother, Paul L. Benfer, of Beaver Springs; and two sisters, Evelyn L. Norman, of Middleburg, and Dorothy S. Coleman, of Northumberland.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, followed by the funeral at 2, with her pastor, the Rev. Donald G. Hubbell, officiating.
Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
