MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS — Hester R. Shaffer, 97, of Mount Pleasant Mills, passed away on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, in Emeritus at Graysonview Assisted Living, Selinsgrove.
She was born Sept. 30, 1915, a daughter of the late William C.A. and Bertha (Shirk) Reed. She was married to Walter E. Shaffer, who preceded her in death.
Hester was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church, which she attended until she was no longer able. Hester and her late husband always were very active in the Fremont Fire Department and the Republican Party. They also participated in the Friday night bowling league.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Albert “Dutch” Musser, of El Reno, Okla., and Linda and Tom Hoover, of Middleburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Renee Shaffer, of Middleburg, Larry and Wendy Shaffer, Carl and Deborah Shaffer and Scott and Melanie Shaffer, all of Mount Pleasant Mills; one sister, Alma Finkenbinder, of Carlisle; 18 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 10 sisters, Florence McGuire, Grace Smith, Helen McGuire, Hazel Murphy, Mildred Barrick, Della “Del” Minium, Margaret Reed, Anna Weldon, Bertha Barrick and Erma Knuth; one brother, William C.A. Reed Jr.; and an infant child, Connie.
A viewing will be held from noon to 2 Friday at Richfield United Methodist Church, Church Street, Richfield, followed by the funeral at 2 with Pastor Leon Scholl officiating and Pastor Vernon Shenberger co-officiating.
A private burial will follow the service in Fairview Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills.
