Joseph G. Reed, 54, Coal Township

— COAL TOWNSHIP — After a long courageous battle with leiomyosarcoma, Joseph Gilbert Reed, 54, of 1322 W. Montgomery St., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014. Joe was at home surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Shamokin on Oct. 24, 1959, he is a son of Catherine R. (Gratti) Reed and the late Richard Douglas Reed, of Coal Township.

Joe attended St. Josephs Elementary School and was a 1977 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School. He attended Lebanon Valley College and graduated from Shippensburg University in 1982 with a bacherlors degree in busines administration.

On May 28, 1983, in the First Presbyterian Church, Shamokin, Joe married the former Judy Lynne Milbrand, of Shamokin. This May, they would have celebrated 31 years of marriage. Together they had four children.

Growing up he was a member of the St. Josephs Church.

Joe volunteered at the Shamokin Emergency Squad as a Pennsylvania State Certified EMT.

He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Independence Fire Company, of Shamokin.

Joe was an avid skier and enjoyed trips to Colorado. He was also an amusement park enthusiast who especially loved extreme roller coasters. Joe loved to travel to big cities with his family as well as attending concerts with his wife.

Joe was an accomplished athlete who excelled in wrestling at both the high school and collegiate levels and later became involved in the Shamokin Elementary Wrestling program. His children’s involvement in soccer led him to become a PIAA soccer official. He was the president of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Soccer Officials. Joe had the honor of being selected to officiate at the 2003 and2010 high school soccer state finals in Hershey. Despite being ill, he was able to attend the 2013 high school State Championship game and was chosen to do the coin toss as an honorary official.

Joe’s career in law enforcement began in Colorado working as a deputy at the Jefferson County sheriff’s department. In 1987, he entered the Federal Bureau of Prisons at USP Lewisburg and attained the rank of senior officer specialist. Joe was promoted to step 9 Lt. at FCI Memphis in 1991. Following his service in Memphis, Joe received a promotion to step 11 Lt. at FCI Allenwood in 1992. He transferred to FCI Schuylkill in 1999 and officially retired on Jan. 10, 2014, after more than 25 years of service.

In addition to his wife Judy, he is survived by daughter Joelle Lynne Reed and boyfriend Shawn Zalinski, of Coal Township, daughters, Julissa Nicole Reed and Danielle Alexis Reed and son, David Richard Reed, of Coal Township; mother, Catherine Reed, of Coal Township; brother, Ralph A. Reed and companion Bonnie Bradley, of Coal Township; sister, Karen E. Witkoski and husband Jeffrey, of Kulpmont; mother-in-law, Bernice Milbrand, of Shamokin; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Milbrand) Lacross and husband Vincent, of Bellefonte, Barbara (Milbrand) Allgaier and husband Frederick, of Morrison, Col., and Janet (Milbrand) Fenton and husband Robert, of Glemoore, Pa.; nieces and nephews, Mallory and Tanner Reed, Madelyn, Reed, Rachel and Kathryn Witkoski, and Cathleen and Steve Walker; sons, Henry and Clark, Vincent Lacross, Taylor and Jacquilyn Fenton, and Adam Allgaier; and many close friends who meant very much to him.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard D. Reed; paternal grandparents, Ralph and Thelma Reed; maternal grandparents, Gilbert and Rose Gratti; and father-in-law, David H. Milbrand.

Visitors may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Sunbury Street (SR 61) and Liberty Street, Shamokin, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ted Plott officiating.
