Shirley T. (Starook) Frisby, San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — Shirley T. (Starook) Frisby, of South San Francisco, passed away at her home July 3, 2013, following complications from a lengthy illness.

Shirley was born July 1, 1923, in Northumberland County, a daughter of the late Clyde S. and Violet (Horton) Starook.

Following graduation from Northumberland High School, Northumberland, PA., she attended Bloomsburg Pa. State Teachers College (currently Bloomsburg University), graduating with a B.S. degree in elementary education.

Shirley taught in Pennsylvania school districts in Philadelphia, Middletown and Harrisburg, Pa.,  before moving to California in 1949, where she also taught in the Catalina Island and Long Beach school districts. In 1954 she married Kenneth Frisby then later moved with her husband to San Francisco where she continued teaching until retirement in 1978.

Shirley was creative and resourceful, a very dedicated teacher, respected by students and parents alike. She was also dedicated to her immediate family as well, caring for her mother until her mother’s death in 1985.

She is survived by one sister, Virgina Cioppa, of S. San Francisco, and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Samuel L. and Ruth Starook, of Pennsylvania and Dale K. and Miriam Starook, of Texas.

Shirley was a member of Church of the Highlands, San Bruno, Calif. and a student of the Bible, making daily study of scripture part of her life. She will be greatly missed and will be remembered for her generosity and thoughtfulness by all who knew her. The following poem written by Shirley was read at her grandfather’s funeral in 1943:

“The Glory Above”

I often think of the glory above, that someday I shall see,

of the mansions in splendor and excellency waiting;

That Christ has prepared for me,

Of the open arms of the Master; as He gathers us into the air,

Of the crown of the reward that will glisten with jewels,

That I shall wear up there.

I often wonder as I journey here along life’s vast highway,

How long must I wait before I shall see that glorious distant day;

Tarry awhile, the Master whispers, consoling into my ear,

Do not grow weary and faint with care:

That day is very near;

I often marvel that Christ could love one so unworthy as I,

Could send to this world His beloved Son, a ransom from on high;

I thank the Lord for salvation so rich, and free to all,

Who will only drink from the life-giving stream and heed the Master’s call!

Funeral services were held on July 9 at Cypress Lawn Funeral Parlor, 1370 El Camino Real, with burial to follow in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Colma, Calif.
