Dr. Donald C. Trapp, 84, Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND — Dr. Donald Charles Trapp, 84, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, due to complications from a long-term illness.

He was born Feb. 21, 1929, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Frank L. and Mary M. (Anderson) Trapp. He grew up with three brothers, Frank, Bob, and Ed in the Dormont neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

He graduated from Dormont High School. During high school Dr. Trapp began traveling cross-country to work in Idaho, beginning his lifelong desire to travel. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and later Temple University School of Medicine, graduating in 1955. That same year Dr. Trapp met a nurse named Alice, they had their first date and were immediately in love. They were married six months later and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on Jan. 14 2013. He served in the Navy as a designated flight surgeon. Dr. Trapp’s commitment to the Navy saw the newlyweds move all over the country. While stationed in China Lake, Calif., the couple welcomed their first and only child, a daughter, Donna.

Following his active duty service, Dr. Trapp moved his small family to Massachusetts to start a private practice. He returned to Pittsburgh to complete a surgical urological residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Finally, he settled in Wheeling, W.Va., where he practiced as a urologist for more than 40 years at the Wheeling Clinic. As well, Dr. Trapp continued his service in the Navy Reserve for 30 years. He was an associate professor of urology at West Virginia University and served as chairman of The Wheeling Clinic and president of the Ohio Valley Medical Society. In Wheeling Dr. Trapp had found his home, he and Alice built their dream house on Beechwood Drive, where they lived for over 30 years. After his retirement Dr. Trapp continued to stay active and served the community as a Rotarian. He also focused on traveling and seeing the world, Alice as his constant companion. After retiring he found a new passion in painting, often using his travels as inspiration. In his lifetime Dr. Trapp survived many health challenges including three open heart by-pass surgeries which never deterred him from an active lifestyle and his many hobbies and interests. Dr. Trapp was always known for his great sense of humor and love for his family and country.

He is survived by his wife Alice K. Trapp and daughter, Donna S. Schuck; grandchildren, Brooks C. Warman, Bryce A. Warman and Calley K. Warman; brother, Edward L. and Patricia A. Trapp; nephews, Craig and Eric Trapp; son-in-law Richard D. Schuck; and stepgrandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Schuck.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Anderson Trapp and Robert H. Trapp.

Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at V.L. Seebold Funeral Home in Selinsgrove. A visitation and service will also be held at Kepner Funeral Home, Wheeling W.Va., Woodsdale location, at 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, followed by the funeral at 11.

Burial will follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Pittsburgh.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donors favorite charity.
