George F. Shuman, 91, West Yarmouth, Mass.

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. — George F. Shuman, 91, of West Yarmouth, passed away on July 15, 2013.  

He was a native of Northumberland, Pa., a son of the late Muirheid and Margaret (Neibert) Shuman.

George attended Northumberland schools. During World War II, he served in the Army as a warrant officer in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations on the staff of General MacArthur’s Antiaircraft Officer, Major General William Marquat. He received a Bronze Star for the Luzon Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Medal for the New Guinea Campaign, and a World War II Victory Medal for Philippine Liberation.

He moved to Centerville, Mass., from New York City, where he lived for 28 years prior to moving to West Yarmouth in 2011. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years. He entered the postal service at Harrisburg, Pa., as a railway mail clerk.

George served as a postal inspector in New Hampshire and Boston in the 1960s and as district manager in the early 1970s for all postal operations for an area that encompassed the Cape and Islands, Bristol and Worcester Counties, Southern New Hampshire and Rhode Island. In 1973, he became assistant regional postmaster general in the Northeast region located in New York City, having responsibility for customer services and mail processing in eight States. From 1979 until his retirement in 1985, he was district manager and postmaster for New York City, the largest post office in the world. In 1984, George was named Postmaster of the Year by the postmaster general at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

During his years on Cape Cod he was active in the Osterville Men’s Club, where he served on the Scholarship Committee for 18 years, being Chairman for 15 years.  

George greatly enjoyed golf and bowling during his retirement years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Natvig, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five daughters and one son, Coleen Grieb, of Naples, Fla., Ann and William May, of Charleston, S.C., Karen and Dr. Thomas Doherty, of Norfolk, Mass., Maureen Sullivan, of Manchester, N.H., Robert and Sue Shuman, of Miami, and Suzanne and Thomas Hanlon, of Norton, Mass.;  nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Sheehan, of Yardley, Pa.; and two stepdaughters, Dr. Kristine Parsons, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ellen Sande, of Saratoga, Calif.  

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Taylor, and one brother, Donald Shuman.
