John E. Gessner, 86, Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND — John E. Gessner, 86, of Northumberland, formerly of Pillow, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born Oct. 30, 1926, in RR Herndon, a son of the late Charles and Carrie Gessner. On Nov. 15, 1947, he married the former Elva E. Willard who survives. They celebrated 65 years of marriage.

He was employed by Weis Markets, working in the receiving department at the warehouse in Sunbury.

John was a member of Gods Missionary Church of Sunbury and previously served on the Church Board as treasurer. In the past he served on the board of Penn View Bible College and was very involved in the development of Beulah Camp of Gordon.

He loved hunting and traveling and enjoyed working construction on the side.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Ernie and Sharon Gessner, of Paxinos, and Don and Shirl Gessner, of Newark, Ohio; one granddaughter, Abbie Gessner; one grandson, Eric Gessner and his wife, Deborah; two great-grandchildren, Mirabelle and Masselin; three brothers, Floyd Gessner, Marlin Gessner and Robert Gessner; four sisters, Leah Gessner, Marie Lenker, Catherine Lenker and Shirley Lawrence; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Harlin and Fairvin Gessner; one stepbrother, Harold Strawser; and an infant sister, Naomi Gessner.

A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today at God’s Missionary Church, Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with Pastor Jacob Martin and Pastor Keith Bunch officiating.

Interment will follow in God’s Missionary Cemetery, Pillow.
