Gilbert W. Balliet, 77, Watsontown

— WATSONTOWN — Gilbert W. “Sonny” Balliet, 77, of Watsontown, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Born in Williamsport on Sept. 28, 1936, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Margaret (Aunkst) Balliet. On Oct. 11, 1985, he married the former Mary Ann Knappenberger, and they celebrated 28 years of marriage.

Gilbert graduated from Watsontown High School in 1954 and joined the Navy, where he served three years on the USS Intrepid.

Gilbert received his degree in heavy equipment from Williamsport Area Community College.

He retired in 1990 from PP&L, where he had 35 years of service as a lineman.

He was a member of the Watsontown American Legion and Milton Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Since his retirement, he enjoyed his mornings at the Short Stop with his friends, being outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Mary Ann, are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Steve and Terry Balliet, of Watsontown, and Gilbert W. Balliet Jr. and his fiancee, Melony Bryson, of Dewart; three daughters and two sons-in-law,  Stacy and Jeff Mann and Wendy Balliet, all of Watsontown, and Christine and Paul Miller, of Allenwood; three stepsons and their spouses, Randy and Lisa Cope, of Watsontown, Steve and Jessica Cope, of West Virginia, and Michael and Emily Cope, of Virginia; two stepdaughters and their spouses, Andrea and Bob Anderson, of Allenwood, and Cindy and Tony Boroch, of Montoursville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, George Balliet, of Williamsport; and one sister, Peggy (Bob) Weaver, of Fort Myers, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Dominik.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main St., Watsontown, where a memorial service will be held at 7 with Pastor Butch Woolsey, of the Church of New Life, Lewisburg, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the American Lung Association, 3001 Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
