Richard G. “Rick” Zerfing, 64, Danville

— DANVILLE — Richard G. “Rick” Zerfing, 64, of 165 Cherokee Road, unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.

He was born June 7, 1949, in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of the late Richard C. and Arlene June (Breckbill) Zerfing.

He attended Danville schools through 11th grade and graduated in 1967 from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, N.J. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., with a bachelor’s degree in history education and began teaching high school history in Fairview, Tenn.

Rick was employed for 20 years by the Federated Insurance Companies as a senior marketing representative, retiring in 2005. During his employment there, he led the company nationwide in life insurance sales. While there, he also served on the Leadership Council and the President’s Council. Recently, he was self-employed as an independent insurance representative for Donner-Farber and Associates until his death.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Danville, and also had attended Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton. He was a Danville Little League girls softball coach and was the high school girls softball coach for a couple of years at Meadowbrook Christian School, Milton.

Rick enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, enjoying several big game hunting trips to Montana. He enjoyed traveling with his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by the love of his life, best friend and wife of 38 years, Melissa Pitts Zerfing, whom he married Aug. 24, 1975, in Brentwood, Tenn. Also surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Laura and Matt Lehman, of Conshohocken, Christy and Rick Dietz, of Hershey, Kate Zerfing and Rebekah Zerfing, both at home; two granddaughters, Aviana and Madelyn Lehman; and one sister, Julie A. Zerfing Fudge and her husband, Lawrence, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Rick’s life at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, 20 Brookside Drive, off Route 642 east, Danville, with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dawes Dunham. Friends will be received before the service from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Burial will be held privately in Fairview Cemetery.
