KREAMER — Elwood H. Walters, 93, formerly of Kreamer, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
He was born March 31, 1920, in Paxtonville, a son of the late Ernest P. and Gertrude M. (Hassinger) Walter. In November 1975, he married the former Erma (Krouse) Mook, who preceded him in death on May 26, 2011.
Elwood was a 1937 graduate of Beaver Vocational High School, Beaver Springs, and graduated from the Thompson Institute, Harrisburg.
He had been employed by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a tester for many years. He later worked for Witmer’s Feed Mill, Selinsgrove, and Bingaman & Son Lumber, Kreamer.
He was a member of Christ (Hassinger’s Brick) Lutheran Church, Middleburg. He was very active in church work all his life. He had been a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, had served as Sunday school superintendent, sang in the choir, served as secretary and was a synod representative.
He took great pride in his garden, had a real passion for horse harness racing and always enjoyed conversing in Pennsylvania Dutch. Family was very important to Elwood, and he was very close to his four nephews.
He is survived by one sister, Helen A. Swope, of Selinsgrove; his four nephews, Marvin and Kenneth Walter and Glen and Darwin Swope; and a nephew and niece on his wife’s side, Linda Johnson and George Silverman II.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Carson E. Walter; one sister-in-law, Arlene Walter; brother-in-law, Donald Swope; and a nephew, Charles Cockriell.
Friends and family will be received from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ (Hassinger’s Brick) Lutheran Church, Route 522, Middleburg, followed by the funeral at 1 with the Rev. Gary W. Owens officiating.
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Middleburg.
