Thomas T. Shawe, 53, Lewisburg

LEWISBURG — Thomas T. Shawe, 53, of South Front Street, passed away from his battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at his home.

Born in Savannah, Ga. on Feb. 1, 1960, he was the son of the late Arthur T. and Julia C. (McDonough) Shawe. He was married on May 20, 1997, to Rebecca J. Mohr who survives.

Thomas earned a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree in chemistry from the University of Georgia in Athens and his Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta. He did postdoctoral work at Colorado State University. He was an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, and had worked as a program officer for the National Science Foundation, Division of Chemistry.

Tom was a talented and insightful organic chemist who was a highly effective instructor of introductory organic chemistry. He continued to teach rigorous organic chemistry lecture and lab courses even during his recent illness. He was an ardent supporter of academic rigor in the classroom and in the research laboratory. Tom received numerous research grants, including prestigious awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Tom’s research involved new methods for synthesizing compounds with valuable medicinal properties. He was highly valued by his departmental colleagues for his deep knowledge of chemistry, his intellectual creativity, and his willingness to defend rigor and depth in the chemistry curriculum.

Outside of chemistry, Tom was an ardent fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, a scholar of the civil war, and a staunch conservative. He also loved the history and the importance of US railways, cycling, hiking, and most especially white water canoeing. In his honor, his family will donate a plaque that describes the history and importance of the railroads to Union County when the Buffalo Valley Rails to Trail is extended into Lewisburg.

He is survived by his wife; one brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Ellen Shawe, of Savannah, Ga.; one sister and brother-in-law, Anne Therese Shawe-Mendelow and Donald Mendelow, of Dallas, Texas; one nephew, Michael S. Mendelow, of Dallas, and his beloved dogs Jasper, Fiona, and Cedric, who will greatly miss him.

In lieu of flowers, send donations in his honor to the the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority for the Buffalo Valley Rails to Trails Project (BVRT) at 220 Brookpark Circle or to the Benedictine Military School at 6502 Seawright Drrive, Savannah GA 31406.

Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St. Milton.
