James W. Reep, 74, Roakoke, Va.

ROANOKE, Va. — James Walter Reep, 74, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013, in Roanoke.

Jim was born Dec. 24, 1938, in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, the first son of the late Harold Walter and Evelyn Leota (Simmons) Reep.

He graduated from Lewisburg Joint High School in Lewisburg, Pa., in June 1956. Jim enlisted in the Naval Reserves while still in high school and served briefly at the Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Md. He entered active naval service in November 1957 at Philadelphia. During his active duty, he was assigned to the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. His final assignment was to the Department of Defense Computer Institute, Washington Navy Yard, from where he retired in December 1976 as a senior chief petty officer.

Jim spent many years associated with the Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the Silver Beaver for service to youth from the National Capital Area Council, Washington, D.C. Jim was involved in genealogy for more than 35 years. He also was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roanoke.

Jim married his wife, the former Louise Aberedeen Klingler, on Jan. 21, 1957, in Frederick, Md. They have four children, sons, Donald Walter and wife Cathy J. (Crymes) Reep, of Greenbelt, Md., Gregory Allen and wife Terri L. (Roundtree) Reep, of Norfolk, Va., and David Wayne and wife Janet L. (Crowder) Reep, of Roanoke, and a daughter, Patricia Louise Reep, of Salem, Va. He also is survived by a brother, Robert Eugene and wife Marla D. (McPherson) Reep, of Cicero, N.Y.; grandchildren, Heather Ryan, Nathaniel and Nikol (Adams) Reep, Kendra (Reep) and Jason Sides, Alexander Reep, Kaitlyn Reep, Briana Klapp, Carissa Klapp, Jerrett Seeley and Joseph Seeley; and great-grandchildren, Keera Reep and Ethan Hastey.

He was predeceased by his father in 1978; his mother in 1991; an infant brother, Donald Raymond Reep, who was born and died in March 1946; plus two great-grandchildren, Abagail and Haydn Koldys.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third St., Lewisburg, officiated by Pastor Kenneth Lane.

Interment with military honors will be in the veterans section of the Lewisburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 1606, Roanoke, VA 24019, or Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4040 Williamson Road, NW, Roanoke, VA 24012.
