Ross A. Moyer, 65, Lewisburg

LEWISBURG — Ross Allen Moyer, 65, of 47 N. Water St., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at RiverWoods Nursing Facility, Lewisburg. He is now in the Summerlands.

He was born Sept. 30, 1947, in Bellefonte, the fourth son of John Cyrus Moyer and Ruth (Best) Moyer.

He was a graduate of Bellefonte Area High School, Class of 1965, and held a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Lock Haven University, Class of 1987.

Ross was a writer, photographer and radio personality for many years in the central Pennsylvania area.

He worked for several area newspapers, including the Pennsylvania Mirror, Philipsburg Daily Journal, Centre Democrat and Lock Haven Express. He worked for radio stations in various capacities, at WRAK and WLYC in Williamsport, at WJSA in Jersey Shore and at WJKR in Muncy.

Ross was a lifetime collector and seller of antiques as a licensed and bonded auctioneer. During the 1980s, he owned and operated MatchMaker International MidAtlantic, a social referral agency in Wilmington, Del.

Ross was an active member of his community, including serving as vice president of the Bellefonte Area Jaycees, secretary of the Central Pennsylvania Region of the Sports Car Club of America and president of the East Central Region of the Society for Creative Anachronism. He was a member of the NRA, NMLRA and Union County Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.

Ross wrote many columns and articles for various publications throughout the United States devoted to military history and the outdoors. He wrote and produced a documentary video for the Piper Air Museum in Lock Haven, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Piper Cub.

In recent years, Ross turned his talents to creative writing. He published a western genre novel, “Mauser,” and a country boy’s memoir of his Pennsylvania grammar school days.

He was active in the Lewisburg Writer’s Workshop. In 2012, his one-act play, “International Relations,” was performed in Vicksburg, Milton and Lewisburg by the Gaspipe Theatre Company as part of the second annual One-Act Play Festival.

He was in the midst of writing another play and novel.

Ross is survived by his wife, Alice Manzi Moyer, of Lewisburg, and former wife, Cheryl Linn Safko-Moyer, of Montgomery, Ala. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Bonita Summers Moyer, of Philipsburg.

He is survived by three sons, Martin A. Moyer, of Philipsburg, Brian N. Moyer, of White Plains, N.Y., and Spencer C. Moyer, of Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Deborah Linn Moyer, of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Alexandra Ackerman Reed, of Falls Church, Va., and Anastasia Reneau Ackerman, of Lewisburg; son-in-law, Morgan Reed III, of Falls Church, Va.; and one granddaughter, Anwen Reneau Reed, of Falls Church, Va. He also is survived by two brothers, Lynn R. Moyer, of Acme, and Wayne A. Moyer, of Jeanette, their wives, Barbara and Sallie, respectively, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Irwin Moyer, of Dover, Pa.

A viewing will be held from 10 to noon on Saturday at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home, Millheim.

Burial will follow in the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, Rebersburg.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
