Florence M. Hoover, 99, Dalmatia

— DALMATIA — Florence Maud Byerly Hoover left this earth for eternal life on Sunday, June 15, 2014, encircled by her daughter and loving caregivers. She blessed us with her life, love, and inspiration for 99 years, 8 months, and 27 days. Let’s rejoice that she is now whole, walks without pain, can hear the birds, and can see God’s glory.

She was born Sept. 18, 1914, a daughter of the late Elias Michael and Lizzie Jane Paul Bower Byerly.

She learned strength, perseverance, and to live by her convictions through World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the loss of her husband, Dale Wesley Hoover in 1984, breast cancer, and the many other trials of life. And yet, her sweet cheerful disposition and the significance of education in her life made her a source of inspiration, encouragement, and love to her many students, friends, and family.

Florence was a graduate of Dalmatia School, Bloomsburg State Teacher’s College, and East Stroudsburg State College.

She began her teaching career in 1933 at the one-room Eureka school (that she had graduated from in 1927), and then at Dalmatia Normal School. She also taught third grade in Chester and State College.

Florence’s many creative talents and interests touched our lives. She lovingly created clothing; sewing began as a necessity when she was young, but was one of her creative outlets throughout her life. She loved to travel, particularly with church groups, visiting Alaska, the Bahamas, Switzerland, the British Isles, Hawaii, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and even China at age 80. She had a winter home near Leesburg, Fla., that she shared with many friends and family. She enjoyed fishing and playing pinochle with family in Canada at the vacation home of sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Roy Phillips. Florence created beautiful ceramic objects decorated with hand-painted birds, animals and flowers. In later life, she strengthened friendships with Ray and Dolores Miller, Helen Kangus, and Jane Lehman through weekly card games of “65”. She so loved playing this game that she even taught and played it with her loving caregivers, Violet Berger, Krista Kohler, Mary Smith, Jane Arnold, and Jen McQuate.

Florence was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, descended from J. Mathias Bauer, who is buried at her home church.

She is now with her siblings, Lee Byerly, Mae Byerly Phillips, and Marie Byerly Leitzel; and her husband Dale.

Her loved ones here are her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Jane Hoover and Harry Taylor; nieces, Ruby Phillips Hoover, Mary Lee Byerly Laudenslager and husband, Joe, and Barbara Hoover Franz; nephews, Lee Phillips and wife, Carole, and Richard Hoover and wife, Elaine; and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Visitation at her church will begin at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill at 6:30 pm, Friday June 20, followed by services to celebrate Florence’s life at 7 p.m., officiated by Pastor Virginia Cover. A service prior to interment at her home church, Zion Stone Valley Lutheran Church, 1899 Mountain Road, Dalmatia, will begin with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and services at 11 on Saturday, June 21, with Pastor Curtis Zemencik officiating. Refreshments and fellowship will follow both services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Florence’s memory to the National Audubon Society Memorial Gifts, Attn: Memorial Gifts, 225 Varick St., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10014, or through www.audubon.org.

Arrangements are by Hoover-Boyer Funeral Home, Millersburg. You may sign the guest book at www.hbfuneralhomes.com.
