Mario J. Kuba, 47, Mifflinburg

— MIFFLINBURG — Mario Joseph Kuba, 47, of 2 Saratoga Lane, entered into rest at home surrounded by his loving family and faithful dog Shep, at 7:06 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2014. Mario fought a courageous eight-month battle with esophageal cancer, never giving up hope and always having a positive attitude.

He was born July 15, 1966, in Union, N.J., a son of George F. Kuba Sr., of Bethlehem, and the late Rosella (DiBonifazio) Kuba. On May 28, 1988, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, he married the former Kim M. Graham who survives.

Mario was a 1984 graduate of Saucon Valley High School, and later earned his bachelor of science degree in marketing from Penn State University in 1988 and his master’s degree in exceptionalities education from Bloomsburg University in 2005.

He was employed at C.S.I.U., Milton, and worked within the Mifflinburg and Milton Area School Districts. Mario loved working with his special students.  Earlier in life, Mario worked in sales and marketing in the Mifflinburg and Harrisburg area.

Mario was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, where he formerly served on the church council and traveled on mission trips to New Orleans and Virginia with his children.

He was a Cub Scout Leader with Troup 3520 and Boy Scout Leader with Troup 525 in Mifflinburg. Mario was an A.Y.S.O. coach and volunteer lacrosse coach for Mifflinburg High School.

Mario enjoyed traveling, and camping and hiking with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 26 years, are one daughter, Maria R. Kuba, of Mifflinburg; two sons, Logan J. and Noah B. Kuba, both of Mifflinburg; three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Tamara Kuba, of Bethel, James and Roxanne Davis, of Fogelsville, Mark and Tammy Davis, of Hellertown; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Catherine and Larry Rawls, of Croyton, N.H.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bruce and Carol Graham, of Mifflinburg; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Debbie and John Miller, of New Columbia, Leslie and Pat Forsburg, of Enola, Karen and Alan Wagner, of Mifflinburg; and brothers-in-law, Nick Graham of Richland, Mich., and Tim VonNeida, of Winfield; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosella D. Kuba in 1972; and his stepmother, Margaret D. Kuba in 2011.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mario will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg, with the Rev. Peter Bergstresser, officiating.

Immediately following the service, family and friends are welcome to share in light refreshments and fellowship with the Kuba family in the church fellowship hall.

The Kuba Family would also like to thank coworkers, friends, and family. Through your kindness and support, we did not fight this battle alone.

Mario and his family would like to thank Fox Chase Cancer Center for their kindness and compassion in the treatment of his cancer. Our hope was for a cure, but in the end they provided us with the gift of time. Through his treatment, Mario was able to see Maria’s college graduation, Noah’s High School graduation, and Logan’s spring production at Arcadia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to AstraZeneca Hope Lodge, (Kim and Mario’s home away from home),110 W. Laurel Ave., Cheltenham, PA 19012, or to Fox Chase Cancer Center, Esophageal Cancer Research, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111.
