Alfred D. DeSantis Jr., 77, Danville

— DANVILLE — Alfred D. DeSantis Jr., 77, of 717 E. Market St., passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2014, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born March 9, 1936, in Riverside, a son of the late Alfred D. Sr.  and E. Mae (Oberdorf)  DeSantis. He was married for 49 years to the former Beatrice E. Snyder, who survives.

He was a 1954 graduate of Danville High School and a veteran of the Navy from 1954-1958, serving on the USS Ranger.

He was employed by Merck & Company, Riverside, and retired in 1991 from the Danville State Hospital.

Al was a lifelong Danville area resident who was very devoted to his community, especially 2nd Ward. He was very active in leadership roles leading up to his position of fire chief of the Washington Fire and Hose Company “Washies,” of Danville. He was also a member of the other fire companies in Danville. Al was a past Danville Fire Chief serving on the Danville Fire Board. He was the vice president of the Firemen Relief Association for many years. He also served on the Planning Commission and the Hazard Mitigation Commission for the Danville Area Emergency Preparedness. Al was also a member of the VFW, the Danville-Mahoning Lodge 224, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 40, and the Danville Elks.

Al was an avid Penn State football fan and was a computer enthusiast. He was very well known for his friendliness in the community. His greatest enjoyment was socializing with his friends and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Ann and Charles Huber and Carol J. and Dennis Lewis, all of Danville, Gloria D. and Keith Young and Barbara K. and Robert White, all of Bloomsburg; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Visneski Funeral Home Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville, followed by the funeral at 1 with Pastor Greg Molter officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Danville.
