Rev. Susan S. “Shelley” Baer, 67, York

— YORK — The Rev. SusanS. “Shelley” Baer, 67, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at ManorCare Health Services-South, York.

She was born Sept. 22, 1946, in Frederick, Md., a daughter of the late Col. Malcolm R. and Mary Jane (Lundgren) Baer. On May 19, 2007, she married Dennis L. Shoemaker who survives.

Shelley was last full-time employed by The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland as a Priest and was the Vicar of Holy Cross, Street, Md., before retiring in February 2012 with 21 years in the ministry.

She graduated from Bethany College, West Virginia in 1964 and Virginia Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity in 1990. In 1986, she became the first director of the Columbus Alliance For Battered Women. She was priest-in-charge of St. Andrews, Lawrenceville, Va., priest in charge of four collective congregations in Williamsport, then Vicar for St. Mary’s, Williamsport, before serving at Holy Cross, Md.

In addition to her husband, Dennis, Shelley is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Jane and Malcolm Baer, Jr.; one nephew, Jonathon; one niece, Lindsey, all of Columbus, Ga.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Brad Grover, of Greenville, Ga.; one stepson, Matthew and his wife, Heather Shoemaker; two stepgrandchildren, Zoey and Miley; and one stepdaughter, Melissa and her husband, William Bechtel, all of Selinsgrove.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Darlington, Md., with the Rev. Nancy Dilliplane and the Rev. Allen C. Spicer, Jr. officiating.

A second memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Columbus, Ga., after which burial will take place in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, 1024 Main Street, Darlington, Md. 21034.

The J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary Inc., Stewartstown, is assisting the family with arrangements.
