Lester O. Duttinger, 86, Sunbury

— SUNBURY —Lester O. Duttinger, 86, of Sunbury, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013, at his home.

Born in Snydertown on Jan. 29, 1927, he was a son of the late Oliver and Gertrude (Herb) Duttinger. He was married in August 1950 to the former Evelyn Miller, who passed away June 30, 1983.

Lester served in the Navy.

He worked as a repairman for Bell Telephone for more than 30 years.

He was a member of Catawissa Avenue United Methodist Church, Sunbury.

He also was a member of Masonic Lodge 22, Sunbury, a life member of the East End Hose Company and the Sunbury Social Club and a member of Tall Cedars 65, Sunbury.

In 1967, Lester started “The Old Goat Farm” outside of Sunbury, where he spent many afternoons with friends who would stop by to hear stories about his life. Two very special friends, who were part of the “farm,” passed before Lester. They were Robert Brouse and William “Zoomie” Banning, both very good friends.

One of his main hobbies was planting a big garden for many years at his farm. He could tell how many to plant, what to plant and when and how to take care of the plants. He was very knowledgeable about and loved gardening.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Wade M. and Sue Duttinger, of Kratzerville; three great-granddaughters, Angela and Tori Rider, of Sunbury, and Amanda Steen, of Lewisburg; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Bruce and Rachel Snyder, of Millmont; two nieces, Joni Francovich, of Sunbury, and Ann Haynes, of Florida; his girlfriend of many years, Peggy Bickel, of Selinsgrove; and his very special friends, Becky and Ron, of Sunbury.

Lester was the last of his immediate family. He was preceded by four brothers, Wilbert, Ralph and twins, Paul and Robert, and one sister, Mildred Wert.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11.

Burial with full military honors will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
