Beatrice “Bea” McCord, 91,

— LEWISBURG — Beatrice Mary “Bea” White McCord, 91, formerly of Troy, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, while in the care of RiverWoods Senior Living Community in Lewisburg.

Bea was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She considered her family to be her greatest legacy, including her five children, 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bea was born March 5, 1922, in Lewes, Del., daughter of the late William Walter and Effie (Bell) White. The oldest of three children, she was sister to the late Hugh White and the late Robert White, both of Snedekerville. Bea was the devoted wife of the late William J. McCord whom she married on June 15, 1944. She and Bill celebrated 29 years of marriage together until his untimely death in May of 1973. Bea was devoted to her five children, William “Bill” McCord of Hudson, Ohio, the late James “Jim” McCord, of Pequea, Katharine “Kathy” Gathman, of Lewisburg, Ruth Blanas of Bethlehem, and the Rev. Walter “Walt” McCord, of Chicago, Ill.

A passionate student and teacher, Bea had a lifelong love of learning. A 1939 graduate of Troy High School, she earned her bachelor of science in secondary education from Penn State University in 1943. She earned her elementary teaching certificate from Mansfield University in 1974.

Bea taught in both the Troy and Canton school districts, teaching high school English and physical education, and later, elementary physical education and first grade. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association.

Bea remained active in her community all her life, volunteering for countless hours of service in numerous local clubs and organizations. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, she served as deacon and elder, and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was a member of the Troy American Legion Auxiliary for 76 years, a regular volunteer at the Troy Community Hospital gift shop, a member of Eastern Star, the Troy Vet’s Club, the Troy Thursday Study Club, and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), among many others.

Bea was an avid reader and writer of countless cards and letters to her long list of friends and family. She had a love of travel and greatly enjoyed her tours of many states and nations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Spain, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.

In 2010, Bea moved to Lewisburg to live with her daughter, Katharine. She moved to RiverWoods in March 2013, where she was residing at the time of her passing. A proud and patriotic American, Bea loved her country and she was greatly loved and admired by her extensive family and her many friends. She will be dearly missed.
