SUNBURY — Shirley A. Merena, 51, of 420 Old Reading Road, passed away Saturday evening, June 15, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after a very lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 8, 1962, in Sunbury, she was a daughter of Elsie (Bailey) Zimmerman-Pennycoff, of Northumberland, and the late Paul A. Zimmerman. On Sept. 20, 1980, in the former St. Casimir’s Church, Kulpmont, she married Alan P. Merena, who survives.
She had been employed as a dental assistant in the office of Dr. Francis Palermo, Frackville, until her illness.
Shirley was a member of St. Monica Church, Sunbury.
When she was able, she enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, and spending time along Penn’s Creek. Some of her happiest times were spent with her grandchildren, and her Boston terrier “Kolbe.”
Shirley was a very caring person, and always tried to console and comfort others in trying times, even though she was very ill herself.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by one son, Brent A. Merena and his wife Kelly, Stonington; one grandson, Peyton C. Merena, and one granddaughter, Paige E. Merena; one sister, Nancy J. Snyder and her husband Rich, Paxinos; three brothers, Nevin P. Zimmerman and his wife Susan, Sunbury, Harry L. Zimmerman, Trout Run, and Carl Snyder and his wife Maude, Stonington; her mother-in-law, Rita Merena, Kulpmont; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia E. Wolfe and Marjorie E. Attinger, and one brother-in-law, Gerald Wolfe.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Monica Church, Sunbury, with the Rev. Fred Wangwe as celebrant.
Burial will follow in the Herndon Cemetery.
Viewing will be private.
