Helen G. Boardman, 91, Sunbury

SUNBURY — Helen G. Boardman, 91, of 130 S. Front St., our beloved Mimi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 16, 2013, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Sunbury, a daughter of Horace and Leona (Seiler) Shultz. On July 10, 1941, she married Clarence A. Boardman, who preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1985.

Helen was a 1939 graduate of Sunbury High School.

She was employed as a machine operator at Nite Kraft, Sunbury, Miss Siren, Selinsgrove, and David Knit, Northumberland.

Helen was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Sunbury. She served as a volunteer nurse’s aide at the Sunbury Mary M. Packer Hospital during World War II and continued to volunteer her time and talents to many organizations throughout her life. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, where she was a member and past president of Unit 201, Sunbury, as well as past president of the Six-County Council and Chapeau Passe of Salon 180 8 et 40. She was past president of BPOE 267, Ladies Auxiliary, Sunbury, and was a member of the Sunbury Democratic Women and M.D. Rockefeller Auxiliary. Helen was an active member and past treasurer of the Sunbury Senior Center and the Riverfront Tenants Association, where she was a past president.

Helen enjoyed doing volunteer work with many local charities, including the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society. She was a mentor for special-needs children at Shikellamy High School and could be found for many years helping out at the Sunbury hospital snack bar.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Colleen Boardman, of Northumberland, Robert and Bobbie Boardman, of Sunbury, and Kenneth and Susan Boardman, of Gettysburg; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and David Ross, of Sunbury, Kara Boardman, of Northumberland, Aaron and Meriam Boardman, of Carrolton, Texas, Debby Grove and fiance Brian Reichley, of Mifflinburg; Jennifer and Jason Deivert, of Northumberland, and John and Heather Boardman, of Mechanicsburg; two stepgrandchildren, Heather Harter and husband Craig, of Northumberland, and Larry Blosky and fiancee Michele Jenkins, of Danville; nine great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Casey, Brooke, Mia, Meryn and Kellan Boardman, Corbin Ross, Matthew and Mackenzie Apple, Jillian Deivert and Kendra and Carly Harter; one brother, Horace Shultz Jr., of Sunbury; one sister-in-law, June Rubendall, of Sunbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Conrad, of Sunbury, and one brother, Robert I. Shultz, of Teachy, N.C.

Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday in Otterbein United Methodist Church, Fourth and Vine streets, Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gunther officiating.

Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
