Ann E. “Annie” Hess, 78, Milton

— MILTON — Ann Elizabeth “Annie” (Johnson) Hess, 78, of 608 Broadway St., passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at her home.

She was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Lewisburg, the daughter of the late James R. Johnson and V. Pearl (Schenck) Johnson. In 1957, she married Richard F. Hess, and although no longer living together, they remained friends and enjoyed cheering on their grandson together at his many sporting events, but most especially his baseball games.

She lived most of her life in Lewisburg, but for a time in her younger years lived in Hatboro and for the last 12 years she lived in Milton. She spent summers in Philadelphia with her beloved grandmother and Aunt Nellie and would often tell stories about the time spent there. She so loved that time.

Ann retired from the JPM Co. in the 1990s to be a “stay-at-home” baby sitter for her grandson. In early years, she was employed at the Rea & Derick in Lewisburg.

She loved to bowl and was heartbroken when the old Bull Run Inn and bowling lane burned to the ground. She loved doing crossword puzzles and this continued until two months before her death when she said she was just too tired to do them. She enjoyed having a Schmidt’s or two at night when she would be wide awake while her family slept, and she loved the beach and looked forward to heading to Wildwood Crest with her son, Jeff, in the month of October. However, what she loved most in life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Having lived with her daughter for the past 28 years, she became the second parent to her daughter’s children, Tiffanie Lombard and Taylor Porter. Her beach trips with her son gave her the opportunity to spend extra special time with his children, Jaimee-Beth Johnson and Jeffrey “Jakie” Johnson, and for many years, extended grandchildren, Justin and Garan Harrinton. And as her precious grandchildren grew up, she was afforded the role of “great”-grandmother to Jordan Lombard, Mackenna and Tatiana Roberts and Lyla Beth Kitchens.

Ann didn’t care for extravagance. … She was happiest when surrounded by family. Material things, with the exception of family treasures, meant nothing to her. She valued things made for her by her family or given as gifts to her from them. This was evident with her surrounding herself with Teddy Bears, trinkets from the school’s Santa shop and photos.

In her final months, Ann loved going out with her daughter on the closed-in back porch. There they would smoke away, watch the critters running through the yard and up the trees … and she would come up with stories as to why a neighbor’s light was on so late, or where they were headed as they emerged from their homes. She said with a laugh that it was something to do.

Surviving, in addition to “friend” Richard, is her son, Jeffrey C. Johnson, and daughter, Teri Hess-Lombard, as well as her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren listed above.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved brother, James R. “Jimmie” Johnson, who passed away four years ago this month.

At Ann’s request, there will be no viewing or funeral. However, a memorial will take place at the home of her daughter this summer.

Anyone wishing to pay respects and honor Ann may donate in her name to Milton High School Athletics, Milton Little League Baseball or the American Cancer Society.

“My sweet Mother is running on the beaches of heaven. RIP to the wonderful woman I called Mom.”

Assisting the family with arrangements is the John H. Shaw Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
