Giles M. Crabtree, Lewisburg

— LEWISBURG — Giles M. Crabtree died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at his home in Lewisburg, where he had lived for 20 years.

Mr. Crabtree was a resident of the Philadelphia area for 40 years, having moved to the are in 1954.

He was born in Peoria, Ill., a son of the late Martin J. and Mildred (Yates) Crabtree.

He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was stationed in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Crabtree worked for Brown Instrument, later to become a part of Honeywell Corp., from 1952 to 1959. In 1954, the company moved him from Illinois to the Philadelphia area. In 1959, he went to work for American Meter Co. and remained there until his retirement in 1992.

During his tenure at American Meter, he worked in product development and retired as the director of training. During that time, he also did part-time teaching at Montgomery County Community College, Spring Garden College and Temple University.

He was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Glenside for more than 20 years.

He was the committee chairman for Troop 48 of the Boy Scouts of America, which met at the church. He was a life member of American Legion Post 182 in Lewisburg.

For 10 years, he sold antiques in Lewisburg.

He enjoyed ham radio and target shooting, was an avid reader and liked to travel, but his biggest loves were his grandchildren.

Mr. Crabtree is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Martin and Beverly Asselstein, of Highstown, N.J., and Carl, of Ridley; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Vera; and one brother, Harold, of Morton, Ill.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the John R. Freed Funeral Home Inc., 124 N. Easton Road, Glenside, followed by the funeral at 11.

Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Giles’ memory may be made to the Radio Club of Junior High School 22, N.Y.C. Inc., P.O. Box 1052, New York, N.Y. 10002.
