Anna L. Reitz, 89, Sunbury

— SUNBURY — Anna Louise (Lloyd) Reitz, born in Sunbury on Jan. 4, 1925, spent her childhood living along East Chestnut Street with her parents, Albert Leo and Emma Ruth (Curtis) Lloyd, and her cherished dog, Muffy, her beautiful white Samoyed. She spoke often of her fond memories of her Grandpa and Grandma Curtis, who lived next door.

While in high school, Louise began to date a young man from Augustaville, Norman Reitz, whom she continued to date after they graduated from Sunbury High School in 1943.

After graduation, Louise became a telephone switchboard operator at the Bell Telephone Co. office on Arch Street in Sunbury. She enjoyed telling family and friends of her very funny experiences working with her friends and customers at “The Bell.”

Louise knew that Norm would be a good husband to her because he exhibited the same loving and caring qualities as her beloved father. After dating for five years, Louise was becoming frustrated that Norm was dragging his feet when it came to “popping the question.” She finally told Norm to “either P or get off the pot!” Louise and Norm were married in Albright United Methodist Church, Sunbury, on Oct. 31, 1947.

In the mid- to late 1950s, Louise and Norm became the loving parents of two sons, Richard and Robert.

During the 1960s, Louise taught sewing classes from her home and for many years taught Sunday school and was the organist at Zion Reformed Church, Augustaville. Louise also worked as a cafeteria aide at the Oaklyn Elementary School and worked for many years as a seamstress for J.C. Penney at the Market Street and Hummels Wharf stores. She enjoyed singing in the choir for many years while a member of Albright United Methodist Church.

Over the years, Louise crocheted hundreds of beautiful afghans and enjoyed giving them to her family and friends. She enjoyed spending her retirement years with Norm at their home in Oaklyn until he went to be with the Lord in May 2005.

After experiencing medical problems in 2011, Louise went to live with Cheryl and Bob, where she was thankful for the loving care she received each and every day from Cheryl, whom she told was the daughter she never had. Louise also was very grateful and thankful to receive visits from her other caregivers, Jamie and Dawn.

In addition to her son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Michelle, and her son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Cheryl, Louise is the grandmother to nine grandchildren, Julianna Reitz, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Laurissa Reitz, of Camp Hill, Derrick Reitz, of Sunbury, Carolyn Reitz, of Lewisburg, Joseph Reitz, of Philadelphia, Tiffany Berry, of Carbondale, Colo., and Jeremy Berry-Propst, Jennifer Berry and Steffany Berry, all of Northumberland; and five great-grandchildren.

Louise has been looking forward to meeting her Lord and reuniting with Norm, her parents and other relatives and friends whom she missed so terribly. She went home to be with them on Friday evening, March 7, 2014.

Her family, along with her friend and pastor, the Rev. Clair F. Shaffer Jr., will receive visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in St. Elias Reformed Church, Hallowing Run Road, Sunbury, followed by a remembrance service at 7.

Louise will be laid to rest in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Elias Church, c/o Randy Raker, Treasurer, 313 Gravel Run Road, Danville, PA 17821.

Arrangements are by the Olley-Gotlob Funeral Home, 539 Race St., Sunbury.
