George D. Sterling, 83, Harrisburg

— HARRISBURG — George D. Sterling, 83, of Harrisburg, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014.

He was born  in Danville, a  son of the late Myron C. and Helen (Sowers)Sterling .

George briefly attended East Stroudsburg State College, was a graduate of  Penn State University and also did his post graduate studies at Penn State.

He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a professional engineer.

George was a life member of the Soaring Society of America, a member of ASHRAE and the 1-26 Association, former member of American Legion Post 272, and Life Member Penn State Alumni Association.

 Surviving is his wife, Alberta Weaver Sterling; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Sterling Snook; daughter, Gwen Vares; two sons, Greg M. Sterling and Glen T. Sterling; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Ann Sterling.

George’s professional life started as draftsman and surveyor while in the Army, followed by a turn at Kimball Glass in New Jersey. He then worked for Brinjac & Associates before co-founding Flood & Sterling in Harrisburg, a firm which was a pioneer in the air balancing field of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.

After retiring from Flood & Sterling, George worked for the Milton S. Hershey School where he served as consulting engineer, supervisor of the ‘Makeshift Engineering’ department, and jack-of-all-trades.

George lived his life with zest and a thirst for knowledge.   He and his life’s love, Alberta, spent many years as sailplane pilots and at the National Soaring Championships in Bishop, Calif., George was a member of the winning team.

A fan of big band, swing, and classical music, he himself played a variety of musical instruments.

He delighted in knowing how things worked, building, and fixing things. This included building sailplanes in the garage, restoring classic automobiles, and many home construction projects.

 A service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Hoover funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., 6011 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112, followed by vistiation until 8 p.m.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mifflinburg Cemetery.
