SUNBURY — Joyce Grove Epler, 93, a resident at the Golden Living Center “Mansion” passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013.
She was born Jan. 19, 1920, a daughter of the late Merle and Bertha (Barnhart) Grove. In 1950 she married Harry M. Epler, who preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1986.
Joyce was a 1939 graduate of Sunbury High School. She was an avid Penn State fan.
Joyce was gifted in art and sewing in the same way the Barnharts were musicians. Custom-made slip covers for several decorating shops was her home-based business and passion after years at Nite Kraft and David Knit. Girly dresses, brightly covered pillows or toaster covers and hand-sewn teddy bears were all part of her craft/flea market repertoire.
A skilled oil painter of still life and outdoors, her favorite was taken from old Shikellamy post card overlooking Norry and both branches of the Susquehanna. She painted as many originals as possible and today people enjoy them from coast to coast.
Joyce and Harry enjoyed antique steam shows and regularly in retirement took several trips to Nova Scotia by camper. But her favorite trips were flights to California where she enjoyed the many attractions including San Fransisco and Monterey. The most “awesome” was an hours-long trip along the Pacific on Route 1 from San Jose to Malibu.
Joyce always enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and focused on family, forever imploring those around her to slow down.
She loved beautiful music, especially gospel.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Marie Kent, of Woodside, Calif., and Jeffrey and Carolyn Epler, of Sunbury; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Faye Reichenbach, of Northumberland, and Janice and Ralph Bohon, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Doug Heim, of Northumberland, Lisa Kent Salazar, of Brentwood, Calif., and Drue Epler, of Tampa, Fla.; four step-grandchildren, living in Harrisburg and Washington D.C.; Dennis, David, Marshal and Linda Epler; nine great-grandchildren, including Josh Heim and Julie Elliot, of Northumberland and Jaxon and Aiden Salazar, of Brentwood, Calif.
Preceding Joyce in death are one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dale Heim; one stepson, Delmar Epler; one brother Glen Grove; and one son Baby Norris.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Packer Street, Sunbury.
Contributions in Joyce’s memory can be made to the Priestley-Forsyth Memorial Library, 100 King Street, Northumberland, PA 17857.
Arrangements are by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King Street, Northumberland.
