SUNBURY — Lois I. (Ticknor) Wintersteen, 88, formerly of 9 Dahl Road, Bloomsburg (Buckhorn), passed away peacefully at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Golden Living Center-Mansion Nursing Home, Sunbury, with her family and the staff by her side. She lived there since 2003.
She was born April 18, 1924, in Zerbe Township, Northumberland County, a daughter of the late George and Martha (Geise) Ticknor. In 1941, she married Robert Rice, who preceded her in death in 1985 after 24 years of marriage. Later, she met and fell in love with Alvin O. Wintersteen, of Buckhorn, and they were married on Jan. 18, 1993.
She was a 1941 graduate of Trevorton High School and lived in Sunbury for many years.
Lois was employed as a seamstress at various garment factories for 52 years, retiring in 1994.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Columbia Hill, Danville.
Lois enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, reading and participating in the many activities at Golden Living Center-Mansion, where she was well known for having created more than 80 fleece blankets for other residents, family and staff. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to casinos, where she always took an abundance of quarters she had saved.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Lynn Becker, of Cape May Court House, N.J., and Donna and Bob Dunkle, of Sunbury; two stepdaughters,, Theresa Filipowicz and her husband, Charles, of Bellefonte, and Debbie Levezey, of Plymouth Meeting; five grandsons, Christopher Becker and Lynn Becker, both of Burke, Va., Robert Hummel and wife Sherry, of Harrisburg, Richard Sinko and fiancee Michelle Suhovsky, of Northumberland, and Michael Hummel and wife Jeannie, of Sunbury; 15 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ilene Knoedler, of Lima, and Faye and Morris Yordy, of Paxinos; and her best friends, Helen Lahr, a resident of Golden Living Center-Mansion, and Bobby Gordon, of Sunbury.
She was preceded in death by one great-great-granddaughter, Ayiram Dewalt; one sister, Shirley Gotshall; and one brother, Edward Ticknor.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 726 Columbia Hill Road, Danville, followed by the funeral at 11 with her pastor, the Rev. Robert A. Kerchoff, officiating.
Interment will be in Columbia Hill Cemetery.
The family will provide flowers. Contributions in Lois’ memory may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
