Joyce E. Bower, 77, Montoursville

— MONTOURSVILLE — Joyce E. Bower, 77, of Montoursville, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. She and her husband are former residents of Turbotville.

She was born July 20, 1936, in Muncy, a daughter of the late Donald W. “Jeff” Sr., and Mabel A. (Watson) Hawley. On June 12, 1955, she married Phillip H. Bower and they have celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Joyce graduated from the former North-Mont High School, Turbotville in 1954 and attended the former Williamsport Area Community College.

She worked alongside her husband at Central Equipment Company, Montoursville, which they have owned for 34 years, from 1979 until her health declined. Earlier in life she had been employed at the Turbotville Post Office.

Joyce was also the organist at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Turbotville until the late 1970s where she was a life-time member. She had also served on the Altar Guild and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Watsontown Chapter 282 Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and a former member of the Turbotville Civic Club. She was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a long-time member of the Nittany Lion Club.

She and her husband were avid Penn State fans and she enjoyed organizing tail-gating events at the home football games. She had a gift for interior design and took great pride in decorating her home, especially during the holidays.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Timothy S. Bower, of Watsontown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tanya B. and Drew R. Potts, of Watsontown, and Andrea B. Bower, of Montoursville; five grandsons, Brandon P. Bower and his wife, Sarah, of Millvale, Christopher S. and Austin D. Bower, and Matthew E. Potts, all of Watsontown, and Noah A. Huffman, of Montoursville; and one brother and sister-in-law, Rodney L. and Bonnie J. Hawley, of Kingsport, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by one son, Phillip H. Bower Jr., in 1956; and one brother, Donald W. Hawley Jr.

Friends are invited to call from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, 39 Paradise St., Turbotville, where the funeral service will be held at 2 with the Rev. Erwin C. Roux, her pastor, officiating.

The burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Muncy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be made to Zion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 77, Turbotville, PA  17772.  Visit www.wfbrooksfuneralhome.com.
