Helen T. Benner, 100, Mifflintown

— MIFFLINTOWN — Helen T. Benner, 100, of Brookline Manor, formerly of Liverpool, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. Helen celebrated her 100th birthday in July and was the daughter of the late Anna (Stephens) and Charles Shuler, of Liverpool. She was the wife of the late Emmett A. Troutman and R. Clair Benner.

Helen was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Liverpool. She was secretary/treasurer of St. Michael’s Cemetery for 15 years and was active in Meals on Wheels and several local organizations, including the Over 55 Club of Phoutz Valley, the Chit Chat Club and the Golden Age Club of Liverpool.

Helen thoroughly enjoyed cooking and baking which she did for farm hands for many years and then later at Nipple’s Convalescent Home in Liverpool. Her joy of cooking, baking and sharing with others extended into baking cakes for all the new babies born into her church family. Her hobbies included crocheting, taking care of her garden and flowers, and identifying all of the birds that came to her feeders.

Helen is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Flo and Frank Montgomery and Helen and David Higley, all of Hockessin, Del., and Sara Troutman, of Glenn Mills; two grandsons, Frank Montgomery and wife, Amy, of Weston, Fla., and Ben Montgomery and Tanyia, of Bloomsburg; two granddaughters, Gina and Beth Scarnati, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; and Clair’s children, Glenn, Kenneth, and Tom Benner, and Susan (Benner) Harris, all surviving and preceded by Rodney Benner.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1000 N. Front St., Liverpool, with the Rev. Rochelle E. Lewis officiating. Those in attendance are invited to the church social room for refreshments following the service.

Private burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Millerstown at a later date.

The family would like to express its thanks to the staff of Brookline Manor, especially to Edna Hockenberry and Kelly Brumbaugh, for their special care and compassion during Helen’s years at Brookline.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Helen’s memory may be directed to St. Michael’s Cemetery Association, c/o Mr. Gerald Holman, 151 Bucher Hollow Road, Millerstown, PA 17062.

The George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 606 N. Front St., Liverpool is assisting the family with the arrangements.
