WATSONTOWN — William J. Gallagher Sr., 79, of Watsontown, found peace after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Dunmore, a son of the late Michael and Agnes (Cunningham) Gallagher. On July 13, 1974, he married the former Helen F. Toomey, who survives. They celebrated 39 years of marriage together.
William served as a tank driver in the Army.
He was employed by Preston Trucking, Watsontown, for many years as a truck driver.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Milton, and a past member of Teamsters Union 764.
William had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories, spending time with his dog, restoring jukeboxes, helping neighbors and friends and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Christa Gallagher, of Howard; one daughter, Christine G. Schaller, of Coopersburg; four grandchildren, Liliana Schaller, Ryan Schaller, Liam Gallagher and Stella Gallagher; one brother, Joseph Gallagher, of Maryland; one sister; Ann Finson, of Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bridget.
William was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and Franck Gallagher.
A public viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dale E. Ranck Funeral Service, 125 N. Front St., Milton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Broadway St., Milton, with the Rev. John D. Hoke as celebrant.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Milton.
